Update to I-35W bridge collapse

I-94/Lyndale heading East has seen a huge increase in traffic this morning.

Broadway and CR-B exits are closed

North bound travelers can use the Cedar Ave bridge via Riverside.

North bound travelers can also use 94E and follow temporary traffic signs for detours.

5 confirmed dead but only 4 identified 9 confirmed dead – Peter Hausmann (47, Rosemount), Sadiya Sahal (22, Minneapolis – 5 months pregnant), Hana Sahal (20 month, Minneapolis), Richard Chit (20, St Anthony), Julia Blackhawk (32, Savage), Patrick Holmes (36, Mounds View), Artemio Trinidad-Mena (29, Minneapolis), and Sherry Engebretsen (60, Shoreview)

100+ injured

4 hospitalized

30 20 8 4 missing – Vera Peck (50, Bloomington), Christine Sacorafas (45, White Bear Lake), Greg Jolstad (45, Mora), and Scott Sathers (29, Maple Grove)

Bridge collapse began at the north end, then a domino effect ricocheted off the structure.

The drop was 60 ft.

Maintenance workers had reduced both sides of the 8-lane 35W down to 1 lane (from 4) for each side prior to collapse. Repair was non-structural work like lighting and guard-railing. Unlikely cause for the event.

35W bridge was unique because the supports were not constructed out of concrete and did not go in the river. They were supported on the banks.

156,336 bridges in the US labeled “Structurally Deficient” including 35W.

U.S. Army Corp of Engineers lowered the dept of the Mississippi river in that region by around 5 feet through a dam.
